On this site, you will find information about the Business Standards, Standards for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians, supporting guidance and frequently asked questions. We have also introduced a blog, which will feature articles from opinion leaders, interviews and top tips to help optical businesses implement the Business Standards in their practice.
The new Standards for Optical Businesses were developed following a public consultation in 2018 and a series of focus groups with patients and registrants, as well as meetings with professional bodies and employers. The Business Standards have been designed so they can be applied in a variety of optical business settings and allow eye care professionals the opportunity to exercise their professional judgement. Our new Business Standards were necessary to make clearer GOC’s expectations of business registrants and reflect changes in optical practice including the use of new technology, expanding scopes of practice and multidisciplinary working.
Why are the Standards for Optical Businesses important? Standards not only help maintain high standards of patient care, they also provide the public with reassurance about optical businesses. Independent research has shown that 84% of the public would prefer to use an optical business which meets a certain set of standards, rather than one that does not.
Optical businesses play a vital role in the provision of eye care services and enjoy a good reputation with the public. Public perceptions research reveals overall satisfaction levels of 94% amongst patients. As the optical sector continues to evolve, it’s essential that patient safety remains the key priority for all eye care professionals. We hope our new Business Standards will help optical businesses respond to the challenges and opportunities the future holds while maintaining patient safety.
